Workshop Emily Soto - Paris 2017
Workshop Emily Soto – Paris 2017

[ENGLISH]

This weekend I had the chance to attend the Emily Soto’s Workshop in Paris.

But can we really say « chance » ? I should say « opportunity » because our life is only made of opportunities that we decide to take or not. And I decided to jump on it …

The workshop took place in a wonderful place close to Paris called La Maison Esprit Boudoir which is a whole house and garden dedicated to photography. Sandrine & Jacques who are the owner of that house are very kind and welcoming. There house is decorated in the “shabby” style.

I am definitively not a fashion photographer so you could wonder why I was there. I am that kind of person who think that you need to be open minded to improve your artistic work, that’s why I wanted to discover Emily’s way of working, seeing her during a fashion shoot, and seeing all that from “inside”.

Day 1 : make-up, hair, stylism and shooting

The team was made of 1 make-up and hair artist (Caroline Madison), 1 stylist (Gogo Touré) and her 2 assistants, 2 gorgeous models (Charlie Melchiori and Anne Lise Maulin), and of course Emily Soto at the camera to show us how she works, her husband Victor Soto to let us try new cameras and lenses, and Krista Lajara who help them during the workshop. Fashion photography is definitively a team job. Each person is very important to have a great final result.

We shoot with natural light and with continuous light added to the natural light, which was a good exercise for me who usually work a lot with strobes (Elinchrom). Emily taught us how to play with composition and lightning, and how to add creativity in our shoots.

Jour 1 : make-up, coiffure, stylisme and prise de vue

Emily and Victor shared a lot with the students. They let us use almost all the cameras and lenses. We could try the Petzval which works like my Lensbaby Twist 60 to add a circular bokeh to the background, and also the Polaroid 440 and the I-1 from the impossible Project.

Before being a digital photographer I was (and still am) an analog photographer. I love film. I love the quiet dark room (which was my bathroom). I love to wait for the final result. I love to take my time. I love to try. And I love to play with out of date films and cross processing. My business goals made me stock all my analog camera in a box, but today I decided this will change. I will go back to my first love of photography. I will use again my Mamiya 330, my Pentax Me-F, my Kodak Brownie, and my pinhole cameras …

Je vais à nouveau utiliser mon Mamiya 330, mon Pentax Me-F, mon Kodak Brownie, and mes sténopés …

Day 2 : Emily’s work, fashion photography, and retouching

I learned a lot during that second day, I really love spending hours listening to famous photographers talking about their work. The morning was dedicated to Emily’s work : how she began, what she tried, the choices she made, how she grew up her portfolio, and how she managed to work with the high-end fashion designers and magazines.

The afternoon was more technical. Victor explained a lot about Capture One and Photoshop, and we also discovered how Emily Soto Fashion Actions work, and how they can improve our retouching workflow.

After two days spent with the team, I really encourage you to attend to one of her next workshop (Paris or New York). That was also a great opportunity for me to meet photographers from all around the world such as Bonnie Cee (Australia), Beatrice Cruvieller (Paris) and Edith Laurent-Neuhauser (Austria).
